How To… DIY

Properly Dusting with a Microfiber Rag

Here are a few tips from Maids and Moore on how to properly dust your furniture.
1. Make sure to use a cleaner that will not damage the furniture – first try testing a small area that is not visible
2. NEVER spray directly onto furniture-this will cause staining, fading, and damage to your furniture. It may also cause a hard to remove film that will either take a while to remove, if it can be removed at all. Some pieces of furniture have sentimental value and you want to make sure they are always taken care of and cleaned properly
3. We recommend that the cleaner is sprayed directly onto a microfiber cloth and then wiped following the grain of the furniture. This will prevent a very visible film across the furniture which is caused by your rag being saturated with cleaner it will only pack and press the dust onto the furniture verses removed the dust from the furniture.

How to Clean Stainless Steel

Home remedy, all natural non-toxic, for cleaning stainless:

maid-service-austinStainless steel appliances add a wonderful spice to any kitchen. Unfortunately, we feel as if it’s attracted to finger smudges and other dull looking blemishes. We’ve all been complaining about our nasty, spotty stainless steel appliances for a while now, yet, we still keep on purchasing these stainless steel appliances and adding them to our kitchen. It’s a never ending cycle for us. Luckily, our awesome residential house cleaning maids in the Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, and other surrounding areas have found this great tip in polishing stainless steel appliances by just using olive oil. Here is a quick overview on how to clean stainless steel appliances and make them look as if they’ve just been bought.

Stainless steel is very porous, and needs moisture, BUT NO WATER or Windex. If water gets into the pores of stainless then the stainless can rust. It Needs oil. We like to compare it to a person who has dry skin. They have to moisturize it so the lotion or oil can soak into their pores and BAM their skin is soft and appears very healthy. Stainless steel is the same way.

How-To-Clean-SteelThere are many natural oils you can use on Stainless appliances for when you decide to do some housecleaning, but our Maids and Moore maids like to use Olive Oil because it is a very common pantry item. Take a microfiber cloth, or soft cloth, and saturate a “quarter size” with olive oil. Wipe with the grain of the stainless, and repeat until stainless is nice and shiny. You May need to reapply olive oil to the rag several times.

Although; I am not discouraging the use of “stainless steel market products”, because a lot of them are very good products, just make sure that you choose one that has an oily base. The stainless steel wipes do not have enough moisture and tend to leave streaks. Olive Oil can be pricey and it may be more cost effective to use a “market product”, but if you are in a pinch, don’t forget about the Olive oil in the pantry.

This tip is an easy and simple way to clean because you won’t run into random chemicals that are almost always found in regular house cleaning products that leave stray marks on your appliances. Also, since olive oil is used by many to cook and you already have some in your pantry, then it most likely helps with money spending.

Cheap and Safe way to get rid of Mildew

To clean mildew, you’ll need some distilled white vinegar, an empty spray bottle, baking soda, gloves, and an aggressively abrasive sponge.

Fill the empty spray bottle with the white vinegar and don’t dilute. Liberally spray all the affected areas.

When the vinegar has had time to set, dampen your scrubbing sponge with hot water and load it with baking soda. I give the mildew one last taste of vinegar, and then scrub away. The most important mildew-cleaning ingredient here is of course elbow grease.

While you’re at it, you may as well clean the area of dirt and soap scum ring. Vinegar and baking soda is the way to go even if you’re not trying to clean mildew, but just every day, ordinary filth.

Step back and enjoy it!!

How to get Wax Out of Carpet

Candle wax makes a right mess on carpets, and is a devil to remove. But with this quick tip you can easily get the candle wax out and make your carpet as good as new.

Step 1: Scrape off the excess
Plug your iron in somewhere within reach of the waxy patch. While you’re waiting for it to warm up use a blunt knife to scrap off as much excess wax as possible.

Step 2: Iron
Now lay a paper towel or brown paper over the remaining wax and iron over the top. Keep it moving slowly, just as you would when ironing clothes, and make sure you don’t burn anything. The heat will cause the wax to melt and absorb into the paper. Keep ironing over a clean piece of paper or cloth until all the wax has been absorbed.

Cleaning Tips for New or Expecting Mothers

Let’s face it — babies like to stick germy, dirty things in their mouths. That means keeping your home as clean as possible in order to help reduce the surface germs that may make your baby sick.  Here are three tips to maintain a cleaner, healthier home.

1. Clean As You Go
With a new little one around, time is a luxury few mothers have.  Make the most of every minute by disinfecting and spot cleaning throughout the day.  Disinfecting wipes should be kept on hand so you can clean and disinfect areas where babies crawl.

2. Was Hands Frequently
Germs are one of your babies biggest threats. Since you will be entering the outside world and bringing these germs back with you, make sure you shield your new baby by washing your hands more than usual.

3. Disinfect and Sanitize Daily
Clean the toys your baby handles on a daily basis. By using disinfecting wipes you can eliminate 99.9% of germs found on toys and other things such as the remote control that your baby might be fascinated with.

If you aren’t finding the time to keep your house as clean as normal, call up Maids and Moore to start routine cleaning.  It is our mission to create time for busy people, and new mothers could sure use that time!
